 Join us on March 29th for presentations on innovation in the delivery of legal services and an exclusive discussion on the issues that arise from testing driverless vehicles on public streets.

 

LexTalk speakers will address the ways legal innovation and artificial intelligence will drive change in legal services, legal education, and access to justice. Speakers will include the CEO of Casetext, the Head of Legal Project Management in the Americas, HoganLovells, the Head of Intellectual Property at Square, the General Counsel at Scale Ventures and the Dean and Chancellor of UC Hastings.

 

The fishbowl panel on Autonomous Vehicles will bring together the foremost experts in the field to address the issues that arise from the testing of driverless cars on city streets. There will be representatives from city government, the autonomous vehicle industry, policy think tanks, and academic institutions, all of whom are leaders in the field. 


 In our fishbowl style panel, a seat remains empty at all times. Audience members are welcome to join the discussion to add questions or comments at any point.

 

This panel will be governed by the Chatham House Rule. 

There will be no recording or public disclosure of what is said during the fishbowl panel on autonomous vehicles. This is an exclusive opportunity to participate in a frank discussion with experts in this field.

Chancellor & Dean David Faigman is the John F. Digardi Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of California Hastings College of the Law and holds an appointment as Professor in the School of Medicine (Dept. of Psychiatry) at the University of California, San Francisco. Faigman is the author of over 50 articles and essays, and has published in a variety of outlets, including the Chicago, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Northwestern law reviews, Science, Sociological Methods & Research and Nature Reviews Neuroscience. He is also the author of three books.

For more than 10 years, Ms. Brown has been responsible for implementing practice-oriented and business development initiatives that are focused on institutional knowledge sharing and collaboration, professional skills development, effective client service, and efficient legal management. Most recently, Ms. Brown led the effort to develop and deliver an award-winning legal services delivery program.

Prior to practicing law, Ms. Brown was a software consultant providing computer systems implementation and training services to clients across the US and around the world.

Jake Heller is the Founder and CEO of Casetext, which leverages data science and artificial intelligence to create powerful, context-aware legal research technology. Jake was named to Forbes 30 Under 30 and the Fastcase 50 for legal innovation for his work at Casetext. Before starting Casetext, Jake was a litigator at Ropes & Gray. He graduated from Stanford Law School, where he was president of Stanford Law Review, and clerked for Judge Michael Boudin on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. He’s a Silicon Valley native, and has been programming since childhood.

Kirupa Pushparaj is head IP counsel at Square, Inc., where he helps build Square’s patent and trademark portfolios, and also manages various IP litigation, copyright, domain, and trade secret issues. Before working at Square, Kirupa was patent counsel for Lab126, the digital products arm of Amazon.com, and also practiced intellectual property law at Perkins Coie LLP prior to that. Before starting his practice of law, Kirupa was a senior design engineer at Intel Corp., working on circuit design and semiconductor process technology.

After clerking on the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, Justin spent five years at McKinsey & Co. as a management consultant, working in the Sustainability & Resource Productivity and Infrastructure Practices. He then served for two years on the leadership team of former California Attorney General (now Senator) Kamala Harris managing technology policy, strategy, and operations for the CA Department of Justice. At Uber, he works to scale innovative mobility technologies that will reshape and improve urban life.

Gillian Gillett advises the Mayor of San Francisco on transportation policy matters, with a focus on Caltrain, California High Speed Rail, BART, Bike Share, Autonomous Vehicles and Smart City issues. Gillian came to City Hall from the private sector, where she ran a custom software consulting company specializing in systematic redesign of business processes and workflow for large organizations. She is a graduate of St. John's College, Annapolis, MD. She lives in the Mission District in San Francisco with her two teenagers and partner, a software architect. She was appointed to the Caltrain Joint Powers Board by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

Dr. Shladover was one of the pioneers in the creation of the ITS program in the U.S., beginning with work on founding the California PATH Program in the mid 1980s. He received his bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in Mechanical Engineering from MIT, where he also satisfied all the course requirements for a doctorate in Transportation Systems. He began working on applications of information technology to improving surface transportation as a graduate student in 1973, and has worked since then on a wide variety of research projects.

Phillip Zackler leads the legal and compliance team at Toyota Research Institute (TRI), the mission of which is to improve the quality of human life through advances in artificial intelligence, automated driving, and robotics. After starting his career at Kirkland & Ellis and Minami Tamaki LLP, Phillip was senior legal counsel for GoPro’s software-and-services department. At TRI, Phillip oversees all aspects of legal and compliance, including corporate, product, regulatory, IP, data/software licensing, and University research sponsorships. He is active in community affairs and currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Glide Foundation, the San Francisco anti-poverty organization.

Professor Alice Armitage is a member of the faculty at UC Hastings College of the Law. She is also Director of Law & Technology Programming at UC Hastings. In that role she supervises two innovative programs, the Startup Legal Garage and LexLab. She has published several articles on legal issues confronting startups, corporate governance, and. Her early career included years at the DC law firm of Arnold & Porter and the Treasury Department, and she has taught as an adjunct at UCLA. More recently, Alice was founder and CEO of a mobile safety app startup and has provided consulting services to other startup companies.

Mollie is the Program Manager for Technology and City Transportation at NACTO. She leads NACTO’s work on autonomous vehicles & technology policy in cities, including NACTO’s Blueprint for Autonomous Urbanism and the SharedStreets data sharing project. Mollie also leads NACTO’s policy work on congestion pricing.
Previously, Mollie was a transportation planner at Fehr & Peers. Prior to that she worked on transportation research for the Bay Area’s Metropolitan Transportation Commission, as well as the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development in Chicago, and the Congress for the New Urbanism. Mollie holds a Master of Science in Sustainable Urban Development from the University of Oxford, and received her BA in Geography from DePaul University.
